The very first property acquired by the National Trust soon after its foundation in 1895 was a small plot of clifftop land above Barmouth. In the early years many more sections of coast were acquired including places like Blakeney Point.
During the 1960's the Trust became especially aware of increasing pressures on the coast from developments of various forms, and they identified 1000 miles that was beautiful and needing protection. As a matter of policy they decided to acquire as much of that coast as possible. Nowadays the ownership stands at over 778 miles.
The talk is an introduction to the work of the National Trust in protecting coastline, covering both early and more recent acquisitions, and with an emphasis on showing the lovely areas that we and future generations can enjoy.
